Dryer Lint Trap Not Working

A lint trap that is "not working" usually means one of two things: the screen is torn or has gaps that let lint pass through into the airflow path, or the trap will not seat and lock properly, which can trigger a door/trap safety switch on some models or simply let air (and lint) bypass it entirely.

The lint trap is the first line of defense in the dryer's airflow path -- everything downstream of it (the duct to the blower, the blower wheel itself, the heater box, and the exhaust vent to the outside) depends on the trap catching most of the lint before it gets there. When the trap stops doing its job, lint accumulates further down the line instead, which is how a worn-out lint trap ends up causing a blown thermal fuse or a clogged blower wheel weeks or months later.

This is a fire-safety issue as much as a performance one: unchecked lint buildup anywhere past the trap is the leading cause of home dryer fires.

Safety first. Dryers combine household electricity, a spinning drum and motor, and -- on gas models -- a live fuel line.

  • Unplug the dryer, or shut off the breaker for a hardwired unit, before removing any panel or touching internal components.
  • Gas dryers: shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit before working on it. If you smell gas at any point, leave the area immediately and call your gas utility from outside -- do not flip switches or search for the leak yourself.
  • Lint is flammable. A clogged lint trap or exhaust vent is a fire hazard, not just a performance problem -- treat a dryer that runs hot, or a thermal fuse that keeps blowing, as a reason to check the vent, not just replace the part.
  • Call a licensed technician if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.

Most Likely Causes

  1. Torn or gapped screen mesh — The most common failure. Repeated flexing and lint buildup over years wears a hole or seam gap in the mesh, and lint starts passing straight through on every load even though the trap looks intact from the top.
  2. Trap will not seat or lock — A bent frame or worn slot means the trap does not sit flush, leaving a gap around the edges for air and lint to bypass.
  3. Heavy buildup that lint sticks to — A film of fabric softener or dryer sheet residue on the mesh makes new lint stick less and pass through more easily, which can look like a torn screen even when the mesh itself is intact.
  4. Housing beneath the trap packed with lint — Even with a good screen, lint that escapes around the edges collects in the housing slot itself over time and eventually restricts airflow the same way a torn screen does.

How to Check It

This applies identically to electric and gas dryers -- the lint trap and the airflow path in front of the heater box are the same regardless of how the dryer generates heat.
