Dryer Taking Too Long

A dryer that eventually finishes but takes noticeably longer than it used to is almost always an airflow or sensing problem, not a broken part that has stopped working entirely -- if the dryer produced zero heat, it would not dry clothes at all, even slowly.

The two most common explanations are opposite ends of the same airflow path: something restricting the exhaust so heat and moisture cannot leave fast enough, or a moisture-sensing part that has stopped reading correctly and keeps extending the cycle past when the load is actually dry. Overloading the dryer beyond its rated capacity produces the same symptom without any part failing at all, so it is worth checking load size before assuming a repair is needed.

Safety first. Dryers combine household electricity, a spinning drum and motor, and -- on gas models -- a live fuel line.

  • Unplug the dryer, or shut off the breaker for a hardwired unit, before removing any panel or touching internal components.
  • Gas dryers: shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit before working on it. If you smell gas at any point, leave the area immediately and call your gas utility from outside -- do not flip switches or search for the leak yourself.
  • Lint is flammable. A clogged lint trap or exhaust vent is a fire hazard, not just a performance problem -- treat a dryer that runs hot, or a thermal fuse that keeps blowing, as a reason to check the vent, not just replace the part.

Most Likely Causes

  2. Clogged lint trap — A trap that is not catching lint effectively lets it collect further down the airflow path, gradually reducing airflow the same way a clogged vent does.
  3. Failed or dirty moisture/radiant sensor — A sensor coated in fabric softener residue, or one that has failed outright, can report the load as damp long after it is actually dry.
  4. Overloading — A load packed beyond the drum's rated capacity dries unevenly and takes longer regardless of how well every part is working.

This diagnostic order is the same for electric and gas dryers -- airflow and moisture sensing do not differ by fuel type, only the heat source producing the warm air does.

Diagnostic Order

  1. Reduce the load size and run a normal cycle to rule out overloading first -- it costs nothing to test.
  2. Check and clean the lint trap screen, then check the exhaust vent for restriction as described in the linked guides above.
  3. If airflow is clear and the problem continues, clean the moisture sensor bars inside the drum with rubbing alcohol.
  4. If drying time is still long after all three checks, the sensor or a related control board component has likely failed and needs replacing.

What Counts as "Too Long"

Drying times vary by load size, fabric type, and how much water the washer's spin cycle already removed, so there is no single normal number of minutes. What matters is the change: if the same size load of the same fabric now regularly takes noticeably longer than it did a few months ago, that trend is the real signal, not any specific cycle length. A gradual increase over weeks points toward a slowly restricting vent; a sudden jump after a single load points more toward something acute, such as a torn lint trap screen letting a large amount of lint through all at once.

How to Confirm Before You Buy a Part

Before ordering any replacement part, take a minute to confirm fitment -- it is the difference between a repair that works the first time and a part that has to be sent back.

The full model number matters more than the brand and appliance type alone.
