Dryer Not Heating

A dryer that runs but won't heat is almost always one of these four parts.

Common Causes

1. Thermal Fuse (blown) — The #1 cause on electric dryers. A one-time safety fuse that blows if the dryer overheats. Cannot be reset — must be replaced. Often under $10.
2. Heating Element — Burns out over time. Visible break in the coil when inspected.
3. High-Limit Thermostat — Cuts power to the heater when overheating is detected. Can fail open (no heat) or closed (too hot).
4. Gas Valve Coils (gas dryers) — Coils open the gas valve. If they fail, no ignition = no heat.
5. Igniter (gas dryers) — Glows to ignite gas. Cracks over time and stops working.

Quick Test

Use a multimeter to test continuity on the thermal fuse — no continuity = blown fuse = replace it before checking anything else.
