Dryer Thermal Fuse Blown
A blown thermal fuse is the single most common reason an electric or gas dryer suddenly stops heating -- and on many models it also cuts power to the whole control circuit, so the drum may stop turning too. It is a one-time safety device, not a resettable breaker: once it trips, it must be physically replaced.
The thermal fuse exists specifically to protect against fire. It sits on the blower housing or heater box and is wired to open permanently if airflow through the dryer gets restricted enough that internal temperatures climb past a safe threshold. That means a blown fuse is not really the root problem -- it is usually a symptom of something blocking airflow, most often a clogged exhaust vent or a lint trap that is no longer catching lint effectively.
Replacing the fuse alone, without finding and clearing whatever restricted the airflow, almost always means it blows again within a few cycles.
Safety first. Dryers combine household electricity, a spinning drum and motor, and -- on gas models -- a live fuel line.
- Unplug the dryer, or shut off the breaker for a hardwired unit, before removing any panel or touching internal components.
- Gas dryers: shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit before working on it. If you smell gas at any point, leave the area immediately and call your gas utility from outside -- do not flip switches or search for the leak yourself.
- Lint is flammable. A clogged lint trap or exhaust vent is a fire hazard, not just a performance problem -- treat a dryer that runs hot, or a thermal fuse that keeps blowing, as a reason to check the vent, not just replace the part.
- Call a licensed technician if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.
Most Likely Causes

- Clogged lint trap or lint trap housing — A torn screen or lint packed in the housing below the trap lets lint reach the blower and heater area instead of being caught. See Lint Trap Not Working.
- Clogged blower wheel — Lint that bypasses the trap can pack around the blower wheel itself, reducing airflow even with a clear vent and trap. See Blower Wheel Clogged.
- High-limit thermostat already failed — If the high-limit thermostat that is supposed to shut off heat before the fuse trips has itself failed, the dryer runs hotter than normal on every cycle and blows the fuse repeatedly even with clear airflow.
The thermal fuse itself is the same type of component on both electric and gas dryers -- it protects the heating circuit regardless of whether that circuit is an electric element or a gas burner. How to Test and Replace It
- Unplug the dryer (or shut off the breaker) and, for a gas model, confirm the gas supply valve is off before opening any panel.
- Remove the back panel or front lower panel per your model's service path to expose the blower housing or heater box.
- Locate the thermal fuse -- a small rectangular component with two wire terminals mounted directly to the housing.
- Disconnect the wires and test the fuse with a multimeter set to continuity. Zero continuity means it is blown and must be replaced -- it cannot be reset.
- Before reinstalling, clear the exhaust vent and lint trap housing completely. Installing a new fuse without addressing airflow is the number one reason people end up replacing it twice.

How to Confirm Before You Buy a Part
Before ordering any replacement part, take a minute to confirm fitment -- it is the difference between a repair that works the first time and a part that has to be sent back.

The full model number matters more than the brand and appliance type alone. Manufacturers commonly reuse one body design across many model numbers over several years, changing the exact door switch, control board, or heating circuit partway through the run -- so two dryers that look identical side by side can still take different parts.
