Unusual sounds from appliances are almost always a mechanical part failing. Identify the noise type to find the cause.

Refrigerator Noises

  1. Loud hum / buzz — Condenser fan motor or evaporator fan bearing failing.
  2. Clicking — Compressor start relay trying and failing to start. Replace the relay.
  3. Rattling — Drain pan loose, condenser coil vibration, or ice maker issue.

Washer Noises

  1. Banging / thumping — Drum bearing or spider arm failure. Repair before more damage occurs.
  2. Grinding — Foreign object (coin, button) in the pump or drum.
  3. High-pitched squeal — Drive belt slipping or worn motor coupling.

Dryer Noises

  1. Squealing — Drum bearing or felt seal worn.
  2. Thumping — Drive belt worn or drum glides/rollers failing.
  3. Grinding — Front drum bearing worn through.
