Dryer Exhaust Vent Clogged
A clogged exhaust vent is the single biggest cause of dryer underperformance -- and, left unaddressed, it is a genuine fire hazard, not just a nuisance. The vent is the rigid or semi-rigid ducting that carries hot, moist air (and any lint that escapes the trap) from the back of the dryer to the outside of the house.
Classic signs include a dryer that takes two or more cycles to fully dry a load it used to dry in one, a dryer exterior or the door that feels unusually hot to the touch, a burning or hot smell during operation, and visible lint accumulating around the outside exhaust hood instead of blowing clear. A vent flap outside that will not open, or opens only weakly, is a strong sign of a restriction.

Safety first. Dryers combine household electricity, a spinning drum and motor, and -- on gas models -- a live fuel line.

- Stuck or blocked exterior vent hood — The flap that is supposed to open when the dryer runs can seize shut from rust, get packed with lint on the outside, or be blocked by a bird's nest or debris.
- Vent run too long or with too many bends — Even a perfectly clean vent that exceeds the manufacturer's maximum equivalent length restricts airflow by design and causes the same symptoms as a clog.
This applies identically to electric and gas dryers -- both vent hot, moist air out through the same type of ducting, and restricted airflow causes the same overheating risk on either fuel type.
How to Clear It
- Unplug the dryer (shut off the gas valve first on a gas model) and pull it away from the wall.
- Disconnect the ducting from the back of the dryer and inspect it for visible lint or a crush point.

- Check the exterior vent hood from outside and confirm the flap opens freely and closes again when you let go.
