Washer Won't Agitate

A washer that fills but the agitator (top-load) or drum (front-load, during wash tumbling) never moves is a different failure point than one that will not spin -- agitation uses lower torque and a different part of the drive train, so it is possible for one to work while the other fails.

On traditional top-load washers with a separate agitator post, check for the specific and very common failure of worn agitator dogs -- small one-way clutches inside the agitator base that let it twist back and forth without turning the drum -- before assuming a bigger drive component has failed.

On direct-drive and front-load washers without a separate agitator, "won't agitate" really means the drum itself is not tumbling during the wash step, and should be diagnosed more like the drum not turning guide.

Safety first. Washer repair involves electricity, water under pressure, and moving mechanical parts.

Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before disconnecting it, and set screws and small parts aside in the order removed -- this alone prevents most reassembly mistakes.

Most Likely Causes

  1. Agitator dogs/cam worn (top-load with separate agitator) — Small internal one-way clutches, functioning like a Cam (part W10006353 or W10006354), let the agitator twist without actually gripping and moving the clothes. How to check: with the washer unplugged, twist the agitator by hand -- if it turns loosely in both directions without resistance, the dogs or cam have worn out.
  2. Agitator coupling failed — The Agitator A (part WH43X142) assembly or its Coupl Agit (part WH43X137) connecting the agitator to the transmission has sheared, often deliberately as a wear part to protect the transmission. How to check: check whether the agitator lifts off and spins freely with almost no resistance.
  3. Drive belt slipped or broken (belt-driven models) — Disconnects agitation the same way it disconnects spin and drum rotation. How to check: open the cabinet per your model's service path and inspect the belt.
  4. Transmission or gear case failure — Internal Gear Case (part 3360630 or 389246), Gear (part 62570), or Pinion (part 63320) wear can prevent the transmission from converting motor rotation into the back-and-forth agitation motion. How to check: this typically requires opening the transmission per your model's service manual; confirm the belt, coupling, and dogs all test fine first.
  5. Motor or control board not driving the wash function — Least common; if the machine also fails to spin or drain, suspect the motor or board rather than an agitation-specific part.

Agitator Post vs. Direct-Drive Impeller/Drum

Traditional top-load washers with a tall center agitator post use agitator dogs and a coupling that are unique to that design; newer HE top-load washers with a low-profile impeller, and all front-load washers, tumble the whole drum instead and do not have a separate agitator to fail, so "won't agitate" on those designs should be treated the same as drum not turning.

Tools You Will Need

Most of the checks on this page use the same basic kit: a Phillips and flat-head screwdriver set for opening panels, a multimeter set to continuity/ohms for testing switches and motor windings, a flashlight for looking inside the cabinet, needle-nose pliers for hose clamps and small connectors, and a shallow pan with a towel for any step that involves disconnecting a hose or opening the pump filter access door. None of the checks above require specialty tools. Photograph any wiring harness or hose routing before disconnecting it so reassembly matches exactly, and keep screws grouped by the panel they came from rather than in one pile -- washers use several different screw lengths, and mixing them up is a common cause of a rattle appearing right after a repair.

When to Call a Professional

The full model number matters more than the brand and appliance type alone: manufacturers commonly reuse one body design across many model numbers over several years, changing the exact door latch, control board, or pump partway through that run. Two washers that look identical sitting side by side can still take different parts if their model numbers differ, even by a single trailing letter or digit.
