Washer Drum Not Turning
A washer where the drum will not turn, but everything else seems to work -- it fills, you hear the motor running, the display counts down -- is almost always a broken connection between the motor and the drum rather than a dead motor.
Start by confirming whether the drum turns freely by hand with the washer unplugged. A drum that spins freely with almost no resistance from the motor side points to a broken coupling, clutch, or belt; a drum that will not turn at all, even by hand, points to a mechanical jam or a seized bearing instead.
Top-load and front-load washers connect the motor to the drum differently, so the specific part differs even though the symptom looks the same from outside the machine.
Safety first. Washer repair involves electricity, water under pressure, and moving mechanical parts.
- Unplug the washer (or shut off the breaker) before removing any panel or touching internal components.
- Shut off both water supply valves behind the machine before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
- Call a licensed technician for anything involving a sealed system or the home's mains wiring, or if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.
Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before disconnecting it, and set screws and small parts aside in the order removed -- this alone prevents most reassembly mistakes.
Most Likely Causes
- Motor coupling sheared (direct-drive top-load) — The Coupl Agit (part WH43X137) is deliberately designed as a wear part on some direct-drive washers, sacrificing itself to protect the more expensive motor and transmission if the load jams. How to check: with the washer unplugged, turn the drum by hand -- if it spins with no resistance while the motor runs normally, the coupling has likely sheared.
- Drive belt broken or slipped off (belt-driven models) — On belt-driven washers, a broken or dislodged belt disconnects the motor from the drum entirely. How to check: open the cabinet per your model's service path and check whether the belt is still looped around both the motor and drum pulleys.
- Clutch worn or failed (belt-driven models) — The Clutch (part 3951311, 3946794, or 3350115 depending on platform) transfers power from the belt to the drum; a worn clutch can slip under load, turning slowly or not at all especially with a heavy load. How to check: check whether the drum turns with a light or empty load but not a full one, which points specifically to a slipping clutch.
- Drive basket or transmission gear failure — Internal components such as the Drive Basket (part 388952), Gear Case (part 3360630 or 389246), or Pinion (part 63320) can wear out or strip, disconnecting the drive path even with a good motor and belt. How to check: this typically requires opening the transmission housing per your model's service manual, so confirm the motor, belt, and clutch all test fine first.
- Motor itself failed — Least common; if the drum will not turn and you do not hear or feel the motor running at all (not even a hum), the motor may be the actual failure rather than the connection to the drum.
Free-Spinning Drum Test
This single test narrows the problem faster than almost anything else on this page: with the washer unplugged and empty, turn the drum by hand. Very light, free resistance suggests a broken coupling or belt; normal firm resistance that will not turn at all suggests a jam or seized bearing; and resistance that lets the drum turn but only with a full load suggests a slipping clutch.
Tools You Will Need
