Dryer Stops Mid-Cycle
A dryer that stops partway through a cycle, rather than never starting at all, points to something interrupting power or a safety system reacting mid-run -- not the same set of parts as a dryer that never starts in the first place.
Two very different failure patterns get described the same way. A dryer that pauses and then resumes, or restarts the timer, is usually a control or timing issue. A dryer that stops and stays stopped, especially if it feels hot when it happens, is more often the overheat protection system doing exactly what it is designed to do -- shutting the heater off (and sometimes the whole unit) before something worse happens.

Safety first. Dryers combine household electricity, a spinning drum and motor, and -- on gas models -- a live fuel line.
- Unplug the dryer, or shut off the breaker for a hardwired unit, before removing any panel or touching internal components.
- Gas dryers: shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit before working on it. If you smell gas at any point, leave the area immediately and call your gas utility from outside -- do not flip switches or search for the leak yourself.
- Lint is flammable. A clogged lint trap or exhaust vent is a fire hazard, not just a performance problem -- treat a dryer that runs hot, or a thermal fuse that keeps blowing, as a reason to check the vent, not just replace the part.
- Call a licensed technician if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.
Most Likely Causes
- High-limit thermostat tripping from overheating — If airflow is restricted and internal temperature climbs too high, the high-limit thermostat cuts power to the heater before the thermal fuse blows. The dryer may keep tumbling with no heat, or stop entirely depending on wiring.
- Door switch intermittently losing contact — A worn door switch can register as "open" briefly during a cycle from vibration, pausing or stopping the dryer even though the door never actually opened.
- Thermal fuse near failure — A fuse that is close to its limit from chronic airflow restriction can cause the dryer to cut out intermittently before finally failing completely.
- Control board or timer — Less common. A failing board or worn timer motor can lose its place mid-cycle and stop advancing.
Both electric and gas dryers use the same high-limit thermostat and thermal fuse to protect against overheating, so this diagnostic order applies to either fuel type equally.
How to Narrow It Down
- Note whether it feels hot when it stops. A dryer that is noticeably hot to the touch when it cuts out points toward the airflow and overheat-protection causes above; one that feels normal points more toward the door switch, timer, or control board.
- Door switch: With the dryer unplugged, wiggle the door gently while testing switch continuity to check for an intermittent connection rather than a clean open/closed result.
- Airflow: If the unit stops and feels hot, check the lint trap and exhaust vent before replacing any electrical part.
What Not to Do
Do not keep restarting the cycle and hoping it finishes on its own if the dryer is stopping because it is overheating -- that overheat protection exists specifically to prevent a fire, and repeatedly overriding it by restarting the unit without finding the airflow restriction first increases the risk rather than solving the problem. Clear the lint trap and check the exhaust vent before running another load if the unit felt hot when it stopped.
If the dryer stops the same number of minutes into every cycle regardless of load size, that consistency points more toward a timer or control board that has lost its place than an overheat shutoff, since a genuine overheat trip usually happens at a variable point depending on how restricted the airflow is on that particular load.
