Washer Door Latch Broken
A broken door latch is specific to front-load washers, which use a mechanical latch and strike plate -- rather than the simple lid switch found on top-load machines -- to both physically hold the door shut against water pressure and electrically confirm it is locked before the control board will run a cycle.
"Broken" can mean several different things here: a latch that visibly cracked and no longer grips the strike plate, a latch that grips fine mechanically but fails the electrical continuity check, or a door that will not close far enough for the latch to reach the strike plate at all. Each points to a different fix.
Because the latch assembly usually combines both the mechanical catch and its switch in one part, most replacements involve swapping the whole assembly rather than repairing it, but confirm which failure mode you have before ordering.

- Unplug the washer (or shut off the breaker) before removing any panel or touching internal components.

- Strike plate on the door worn, bent, or loose — The strike plate mounted to the door itself, rather than the latch in the cabinet, has worked loose or bent out of alignment so the latch can no longer catch it properly. How to check: check that the strike plate's mounting screws are tight and that it sits flush and aligned with the latch opening.
- Latch switch failed electrically — The Catch (part 690081) mechanism can physically hold the door shut while its internal switch has failed, so the control board never receives confirmation the door is locked, and the washer refuses to start even though the door feels secure. How to check: test the latch's switch contacts for continuity while manually holding the latch in the closed position.
- Door boot preventing full closure — A door boot gasket that has slipped from its channel can hold the door open just enough that the latch cannot reach the strike plate, mimicking a broken latch. How to check: run a hand around the full circumference of the door boot to confirm it is seated evenly.
- Wiring connector at the latch loose or damaged — Rare but possible; a damaged connector between the latch and the control board can prevent the lock signal from registering even with a mechanically sound latch.
Front-Load Only
