Washer Lid Won't Lock
A lid or door that will not lock is a safety-interlock problem: the washer's control board will not run a wash or spin cycle unless it receives a confirmed signal that the lid or door is closed and locked, so a failed switch or latch can stop the machine just as completely as a major mechanical failure, for a fraction of the cost.
Top-load washers use a lid switch that simply confirms the lid is down; front-load washers use a more complex door latch assembly that both locks the door and confirms that lock electrically, since a front-load door also has to hold in water pressure during the wash. That difference matters for which specific part to check.
A lid or door that closes and feels physically secure but the washer still will not start is more likely a failed switch than a mechanical latch problem -- the mechanical closure and the electrical confirmation are two separate things that can fail independently.
Safety first. Washer repair involves electricity, water under pressure, and moving mechanical parts.
- Unplug the washer (or shut off the breaker) before removing any panel or touching internal components.
- Shut off both water supply valves behind the machine before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
- Call a licensed technician for anything involving a sealed system or the home's mains wiring, or if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.
Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before disconnecting it, and set screws and small parts aside in the order removed -- this alone prevents most reassembly mistakes.
Most Likely Causes
- Lid switch/actuator failed (top-load) — The switch or its Actuator (part 62621) that senses the lid is down has worn out, or the sensing tab has broken off. How to check: with the washer unplugged, locate the switch (usually under the top panel near the hinge) and test it for continuity while manually pressing it closed.
- Door latch assembly worn (front-load) — The Catch (part 690081) or Strike (part 696144) plate that the door latch grabs onto has worn or bent, so the door no longer engages fully even though it looks closed. How to check: inspect the strike plate on the door for wear, and confirm the latch mechanism's hook fully engages it when the door is pushed shut.
- Door boot or gasket misaligned, preventing full closure — A door boot that has slipped out of its retaining groove can prevent the door from closing far enough for the latch to engage, even though the latch itself is fine. How to check: run a hand around the door boot gasket to confirm it is fully seated in its channel.
- Wiring or connector to the switch/latch loose — A loose connector between the switch or latch and the control board can prevent the lock signal from registering even with a good switch. How to check: unplug the washer and reseat the connector at the switch or latch assembly.
- Control board not receiving or processing the lock signal — Least common; after the switch, latch, and wiring test normal, the input on the control board itself may have failed.
Testing Without Guessing
Because this is a safety interlock, do not attempt to defeat or bypass the switch to force a cycle to run -- that removes a safety feature designed to prevent the door or lid from opening during a spin cycle. Test the actual switch or latch component for continuity instead of working around it.
Tools You Will Need
Most of the checks on this page use the same basic kit: a Phillips and flat-head screwdriver set for opening panels, a multimeter set to continuity/ohms for testing switches and motor windings, a flashlight for looking inside the cabinet, needle-nose pliers for hose clamps and small connectors, and a shallow pan with a towel for any step that involves disconnecting a hose or opening the pump filter access door. None of the checks above require specialty tools. Photograph any wiring harness or hose routing before disconnecting it so reassembly matches exactly, and keep screws grouped by the panel they came from rather than in one pile -- washers use several different screw lengths, and mixing them up is a common cause of a rattle appearing right after a repair.

The full model number matters more than the brand and appliance type alone: manufacturers commonly reuse one body design across many model numbers over several years, changing the exact door latch, control board, or pump partway through that run.
