Washer Leaking Water: Full Diagnostic Guide

Where the water appears and when it appears are the two most useful clues. A leak at the front of a front-load washer almost always means the door boot seal; a leak at the back means a hose or the inlet valve; a leak underneath the machine, especially only during spin, points to the tub seal or bearing; and a leak that appears any time water is sitting in the machine, whether running or not, points to a hose or fitting rather than a seal that only fails under motion.
Distinguish an actual leak from condensation, which can drip from a cold water line or an HE detergent drawer in humid conditions and pool in a way that looks like a leak at first glance.
Safety first. Washer repair involves electricity, water under pressure, and moving mechanical parts.
- Unplug the washer (or shut off the breaker) before removing any panel or touching internal components.
- Shut off both water supply valves behind the machine before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
- Call a licensed technician for anything involving a sealed system or the home's mains wiring, or if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.
Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before disconnecting it, and set screws and small parts aside in the order removed -- this alone prevents most reassembly mistakes.
Most Likely Causes
- Door boot seal torn or folded (front-load) — The rubber gasket around the door develops small tears or gets folded incorrectly after cleaning, letting water escape at the front during wash and rinse. How to check: run a hand around the full boot feeling for stiffness, a tear, or a section that is not sitting flush against the door glass.
- Water inlet hose or connection leaking (back of machine) — A cracked Inlet Hose (part 337891), a failed fitting washer inside an Inlet Hose Kit (part 202860), or a loose connection at the wall valve or the washer itself. How to check: with the water supply on and the washer off, inspect both hose connections for moisture or dripping.
- Water inlet valve leaking internally — A failed Mixing Valve (part 3360392) or Valve (part 358992) can weep water into the machine even when the washer is off and not calling for water. How to check: check whether water drips into the tub with the washer unplugged and the water supply on, which points directly at the valve rather than a hose.
- Tub seal or tub bearing leaking (leak during spin, underneath the machine) — A worn seal around the drive shaft, near the Tub Bearing (part WH02X1198), lets water escape from inside the tub during the higher-pressure spin cycle specifically. How to check: run the washer through spin only and look underneath for fresh water appearing specifically during that step, distinct from residual water from a previous leak.
- Drain hose or connection leaking — A cracked drain hose, a loose Spring Hose clamp (part 214739), or a drain hose that has backed out of the standpipe entirely. How to check: check the full length and both ends of the drain hose while running a drain-only cycle.

Tools You Will Need
Most of the checks on this page use the same basic kit: a Phillips and flat-head screwdriver set for opening panels, a multimeter set to continuity/ohms for testing switches and motor windings, a flashlight for looking inside the cabinet, needle-nose pliers for hose clamps and small connectors, and a shallow pan with a towel for any step that involves disconnecting a hose or opening the pump filter access door. None of the checks above require specialty tools. Photograph any wiring harness or hose routing before disconnecting it so reassembly matches exactly, and keep screws grouped by the panel they came from rather than in one pile -- washers use several different screw lengths, and mixing them up is a common cause of a rattle appearing right after a repair.

The full model number matters more than the brand and appliance type alone: manufacturers commonly reuse one body design across many model numbers over several years, changing the exact door latch, control board, or pump partway through that run.
