Dishwasher Upper Rack Falling
An upper rack that falls -- dropping on one side while loaded, sagging lower than it should, or coming off its rail entirely -- is almost always a mechanical failure in how the rack rides on the dishwasher's side rails, not an electrical or control problem.
Most dishwashers hang the upper rack from a wheel carriage on each side that rolls along a track (rail) mounted to the tub wall. On models with adjustable rack height, each carriage also has a lever or cam that locks it at one of several height settings. A rack that settles down evenly on both sides right after you change its height, especially once dishes are loaded, usually points to that height-adjuster mechanism releasing under the added weight. A rack that drops on only one side, or comes off the rail completely, points more toward a broken wheel carriage, a missing end cap, or a damaged rail.

Safety first. A dishwasher combines household electricity with a pressurized water supply line and a tub that can hold hot standing water.
- Shut off power at the breaker. Most dishwashers are hardwired rather than plugged into an accessible outlet, so the breaker is the actual disconnect -- turning the dial or touchpad off does not remove power from the unit.
- Close the water supply valve under the sink or at the shutoff before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
- Standing water in the tub may be scalding. Let it cool before reaching in with bare hands.
- Never work on a unit that is still wired live. Confirm power is off at the breaker itself, not just at the control panel, before touching internal components.
Most Likely Causes
- Height adjuster mechanism releasing under load — The most common cause on dishwashers with adjustable rack height. Each side carriage locks into one of several height notches using a spring-loaded lever or cam connected by a small linkage. A worn cam surface, a weakened spring, or a linkage that has slipped means the carriage stays clipped to the rail but no longer locks at height, so the rack settles downward the moment it takes on the weight of loaded dishes. - Broken or missing adjuster clip / wheel carriage — The plastic clip or carriage that wraps around the rail and carries the wheel can crack at its mounting ears after years of being flexed open every time the rack is pulled fully out, or it can pop off the rail entirely if it was never fully re-clipped after a previous cleaning. A carriage that is cracked but still hanging on can hold for several loads before finally letting go.
- Worn or broken wheel roller — The wheel itself can crack, flatten, or shear off its axle stub from age and the repeated weight of a loaded rack rolling in and out. Sold as Rack Roller (WD12X272, WD12X0272, or WD28X305 depending on model).
- Missing end cap letting the carriage run off the rail — Each rail normally ends in a small cap or stop that keeps the wheel carriage from sliding all the way off when the rack is pulled out fully. A missing or broken cap lets the carriage -- and that whole side of the rack -- run off the rail and drop. Sold as Cap (WD12X344 or WD12X0344).
- Bent or corroded rail — Hard water buildup, rust on an older tub, or a rail bent by forcing an overloaded rack in or out creates a section the carriage cannot roll over smoothly. The carriage can jump the track at that point instead of rolling through it, and drop.
How to Check Each Part
- Height adjuster: With the rack empty, move the lever or cam on each side through every height setting and confirm it clicks and holds firmly at each notch -- a lever that moves freely without a solid click, or one that only holds with light pressure kept on it, has failed.
- Wheel carriage and clip: Pull the rack all the way out and inspect where each carriage clips around the rail for a crack at the mounting ears, and confirm both carriages are fully seated around the rail rather than pinched or partially popped off.
- Wheel roller: Spin each wheel by hand and check for one that no longer turns, wobbles loosely on its axle, or has a visibly cracked or flattened edge.
- End caps: Look at the open end of both rails for the small cap or stop piece, then slide the rack out slowly and confirm each carriage stops before it reaches the open end of the rail.
- Rail condition: Run a finger along the full length of both rails feeling for a rough or corroded patch, or a section that sits slightly out of line with the rest of the track.
DIY Repair or Call a Technician?
Replacing a wheel carriage, roller, end cap, or adjuster link is a straightforward DIY repair on nearly every model -- these parts are held on with a clip, a screw, or a simple twist-lock, and none of it involves disconnecting water lines or wiring. Most repairs take less time than a single wash cycle once the part is in hand.
The one case worth weighing against a technician visit is a rail that is bent badly enough, or corroded heavily enough, that carriages will not roll smoothly no matter what you replace on them. That usually means replacing the rail itself or the full rack assembly -- still a DIY job on most models, but a bigger one involving more disassembly, so it is worth a quick comparison against a technician's quote if you are not comfortable working inside the tub.
Preventing a Repeat Failure
Set the rack's height before loading it rather than after -- changing height with a partial load already in place, then adding more weight on top, puts a sudden shock load on the adjuster mechanism and the wheel carriages that steady, gradual loading does not. Avoid pulling the rack out past its normal stopping point when it feels stuck; forcing it further is a common way an end cap or rail stop breaks in the first place.
If the rack has fallen once already, inspect all four mounting points -- both wheel carriages and both height adjusters -- even if only one side visibly dropped, since the side that failed first often put extra stress on the other side as it happened.
