Dishwasher Spray Arm Not Rotating

If a spray arm has stopped rotating, water still comes out but only reaches whatever is directly above the arm instead of sweeping across the whole rack -- so dishes in that section come out with food residue or a dry, spotty film while the rest of the load looks fine.

Most dishwashers have two spray arms: a lower arm that handles the bottom rack and gets most of the wear since it sits closest to food debris, and an upper arm (sometimes a third arm under the top rack on higher-end models) that relies on water pressure making it up through the whole system. A stalled upper arm often points to a flow restriction lower down rather than a problem with the arm itself.

Safety first. A dishwasher combines household electricity with a pressurized water supply line and a tub that can hold hot standing water.

  • Shut off power at the breaker. Most dishwashers are hardwired rather than plugged into an accessible outlet, so the breaker is the actual disconnect -- turning the dial or touchpad off does not remove power from the unit.
  • Close the water supply valve under the sink or at the shutoff before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
  • Standing water in the tub may be scalding. Let it cool before reaching in with bare hands.
  • Never work on a unit that is still wired live. Confirm power is off at the breaker itself, not just at the control panel, before touching internal components.

Most Likely Causes

  1. Debris blocking the spray holes — The most common cause. Food particles, especially from foods high in starch or seeds, lodge in the small spray holes and either slow the arm's rotation or stop it entirely by unbalancing the water jets that spin it.
  2. Worn spray arm bearing/seat — The arm sits on a plastic bearing or hub that lets it spin freely under water pressure; a worn or cracked bearing lets the arm wobble instead of spinning cleanly. Sold as Spray Bearing (WD01X10268).
  3. Item blocking the arm's path — A tall glass, a utensil handle, or a dish loaded too high can physically stop the arm from completing a rotation.
  4. Loose or missing retaining nut — If the arm is not seated and secured properly on its mount, water pressure can push it off-center instead of spinning it evenly. Sold as Retainer (W10331789).

How to Check It

  1. Pull the rack out and remove the spray arm per your model's release mechanism (usually a twist-lock cap or a center screw).
  2. Hold it under a running faucet and check that water flows freely and evenly from every hole -- a hole that stays dry or produces a weak trickle is clogged.
  3. Clear clogged holes with a toothpick or a straightened paperclip rather than a wide tool that could enlarge the hole.
  4. Spin the arm by hand on its mount and feel for grinding or excessive play, which points to a worn bearing rather than a clog.
  5. Reinstall, load the rack normally, and spin the arm by hand once more to confirm nothing in the load blocks its full rotation.

Preventing Repeat Clogs

Scraping large food particles off dishes before loading, rather than relying on the dishwasher to break them down completely, is the single biggest factor in keeping spray arm holes clear. Running the kitchen faucet until the water is hot before starting a cycle also helps -- cooler water dissolves grease less effectively, which lets small particles clump together and lodge in the arm's holes more easily than they would in a properly hot wash.
