Dishwasher Not Cleaning
A dishwasher that runs a full cycle but leaves dishes with food residue, a cloudy film, or a gritty texture is rarely a single dramatic failure -- it is usually one part of the wash system quietly underperforming: not enough water reaching the load, water that is not hot enough, detergent that is not being released at the right time, or spray arms that are not distributing water evenly.
Where the residue shows up is a useful clue. Food residue concentrated on items directly above one spray arm suggests that arm is not rotating -- see Spray Arm Not Rotating. A cloudy film across everything points more toward water temperature, hard water mineral buildup, or a detergent dispenser that is not opening.
Safety first. A dishwasher combines household electricity with a pressurized water supply line and a tub that can hold hot standing water.
- Shut off power at the breaker. Most dishwashers are hardwired rather than plugged into an accessible outlet, so the breaker is the actual disconnect -- turning the dial or touchpad off does not remove power from the unit.
- Close the water supply valve under the sink or at the shutoff before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
- Standing water in the tub may be scalding. Let it cool before reaching in with bare hands.
- Never work on a unit that is still wired live. Confirm power is off at the breaker itself, not just at the control panel, before touching internal components.
Most Likely Causes
- Detergent dispenser not releasing properly — The dispenser door can stick shut from old detergent residue or a worn latch spring, so detergent never actually enters the wash water at the right point in the cycle. Sold as DISPENSER AS (W11092649).
- Water not reaching proper temperature — Dishwashers rely on hot water to dissolve detergent and break down grease; a failed heating element leaves the wash running noticeably cooler than normal. Sold as Heater Element (99002971).
- Restricted water inlet valve — A valve that is not opening fully limits how much water fills the tub for each wash, leaving too little water to properly clean a full load. Sold as Water Valve Assembly (WD15X27703) or Valve-inlt (8283345).

- Restricted injection hose — The hose that delivers water pressure to the upper spray arm can kink or clog, starving the top rack of water pressure even when the lower rack washes normally. Sold as Injection Hose (99002852).
How to Check Each Part
- Detergent dispenser: Open and close the dispenser door by hand and feel for a weak spring or dried detergent residue gluing it shut; clean it with warm water and confirm it snaps open freely.
- Water temperature: Run the kitchen sink hot water tap until it runs hot before starting the dishwasher, since dishwashers pull from the same hot water line and do not always wait long enough to draw truly hot water otherwise; if the wash still feels lukewarm afterward, suspect the heating element.
- Water inlet valve: Watch the tub fill at the start of a cycle and check the water level against your model's normal fill line; a visibly low fill points to a restricted valve.
- Injection hose: With power off, trace the hose from the pump area up to the upper rack's water supply port and check for a visible kink or a section that feels collapsed.
Ruling Out Detergent and Loading Issues First
Before assuming a part has failed, confirm the detergent is not old or clumped -- detergent pods and powder both lose effectiveness once they absorb moisture from humid storage, and a partially dissolved pod stuck in the dispenser can look identical to a dispenser mechanism failure. Also check that dishes are loaded without nesting or blocking each other, since even a fully functioning wash system cannot clean a bowl that is shielding a plate directly behind it from the spray.

How to Confirm Before You Buy a Part
