Ice Maker Not Working

An ice maker making no ice at all -- as opposed to freezing up or producing small or hollow cubes -- usually means water is not reaching the mold, or the mechanism that ejects finished ice and signals for the next batch has stopped responding. Start by confirming the basics: the ice maker's power switch or arm is in the on position, the water supply line to the refrigerator is turned on, and the freezer temperature is cold enough (typically 0°F / -18°C or below) for the ice maker to even attempt a cycle.

If those basics check out, the failure is almost always one of a small number of parts, in roughly this order of how often each one fails.

Safety first. A refrigerator runs on standard household current but also contains a pressurized, sealed refrigerant system.

Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before you disconnect it, and set screws aside in the order you remove them -- it makes reassembly far less error-prone.

Most Likely Causes

  1. Refrigerator Water Inlet Valve Assembly (part 240531101) — if the valve that supplies water to the ice maker has failed or lost water pressure, no water ever reaches the mold and no ice is produced, even though the ejector mechanism may still be cycling normally.
  2. Refrigerator Ice Maker Assembly (part 241642501) — the assembly houses the module that times each ice-making cycle and signals the water valve to open. A failed module can stop the entire process even with good water supply and a cold enough freezer.
  3. Ice Maker Motor (part 5304445222) — the motor that drives the ejector arm to release finished ice can seize or burn out; if you can hear water entering the mold but cubes never eject, this is the likely cause.

Diagnostic Order

  1. Confirm the ice maker's power switch or arm is on, the water supply valve behind the refrigerator is fully open, and the freezer is at or below normal operating temperature.
  2. Listen for a filling sound during a manual test cycle (most ice makers have a test button or lever) -- no sound at all points to the water inlet valve; a fill sound with no ice produced points further into the assembly or motor.
  3. If water enters the mold but ice never ejects after it has had time to freeze, check the ejector motor next.

DIY-Friendly or Call a Technician?

Most of the causes above -- switches, fans, valves, capacitors, sensors, and heaters -- are modular parts designed to be unplugged and swapped with basic hand tools once you have confirmed which one has failed, and none of them require opening the sealed refrigerant system. The one exception is anything inside that sealed system itself: the compressor, evaporator coil, condenser coil, or refrigerant lines. Servicing those legally requires EPA Section 608 certification and specialized recovery equipment, which is the point to stop diagnosing yourself and call a licensed appliance technician instead.

Before you order anything, take a minute to confirm fitment -- it is the difference between a repair that works the first time and a part that turns out to be the wrong revision.
