Ice Maker Freezing Up
"Freezing up" is a different problem from "not working" -- the ice maker is not sitting idle, it is actively making ice but that ice is building up somewhere it should not, jamming the ejector arm or fusing the tray solid. This almost always traces back to too much water entering the ice mold on each cycle, or water leaking into the mechanism from a source other than the fill cup.
Distinguish this from "dispenser freezing," which is about ice or water freezing in the door dispenser chute rather than inside the ice maker itself -- the two share a root cause (usually the water inlet valve) but show up in different places.
Safety first. A refrigerator runs on standard household current but also contains a pressurized, sealed refrigerant system.
- Unplug the refrigerator before removing any panel, touching a fan, switch, or wiring, or inspecting an internal component.
- Never open or attempt to repair the sealed refrigerant system (the compressor, evaporator coil, condenser coil, or refrigerant lines). Recovering and recharging refrigerant legally requires EPA Section 608 certification and specialized recovery equipment.

- Unplug the refrigerator, remove the frozen mass, and inspect where the ice has built up -- around the fill cup and one edge of the mold points to the inlet valve; a solid block inside the mold itself points to the ejector or mold.
- Once thawed and cleared, run one manual ice-making cycle (most ice makers have a manual test button or lever) and watch exactly how much water enters the mold.
- Compare that fill volume to your model's normal spec if available -- a visibly overfilled mold confirms the water inlet valve is not shutting off properly.
