Refrigerator Defrost Problems
Modern refrigerators run a defrost cycle several times a day: the compressor and fans pause, a heater briefly warms the evaporator coil to melt any accumulated frost, and the meltwater drains away before normal cooling resumes. Defrost problems happen when any one part in that chain fails -- the heater does not turn on, the thermostat does not sense the coil is cold enough to start the cycle, or the timer never advances to trigger it.
The most visible symptom is heavy frost or solid ice building up on the evaporator coil (behind the freezer's rear panel) until it blocks airflow entirely, which then causes the fridge section to warm up even though the freezer may still feel cold. Safety first. A refrigerator runs on standard household current but also contains a pressurized, sealed refrigerant system.
- Unplug the refrigerator before removing any panel, touching a fan, switch, or wiring, or inspecting an internal component.
- Never open or attempt to repair the sealed refrigerant system (the compressor, evaporator coil, condenser coil, or refrigerant lines). Recovering and recharging refrigerant legally requires EPA Section 608 certification and specialized recovery equipment.
- Call a licensed appliance technician for any compressor, evaporator, or refrigerant-related work -- the parts covered on this page (fans, switches, valves, sensors, heaters) are outside the sealed system and are safe to inspect yourself once the unit is unplugged.
Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before you disconnect it, and set screws aside in the order you remove them -- it makes reassembly far less error-prone.
Most Likely Causes
- Refrigerator Defrost Heater WR51X10055 (part WR51X10055) — the heating element mounted near or wrapped around the evaporator coil no longer warms up during the defrost cycle, so frost keeps accumulating cycle after cycle instead of being cleared. This is the most common single point of failure in the defrost system.
- Refrigerator Defrost Bi-Metal Thermostat (part 5303918202) — this thermostat senses coil temperature and tells the control to end the defrost cycle once the coil is warm enough. If it fails stuck closed, the heater can run too long or continuously; stuck open, the heater never gets power at all. - Refrigerator Timer (part 215846606) — found mainly on older mechanical-timer refrigerators, this timer switches the unit between the cooling cycle and the defrost cycle on a schedule. A timer that has stopped advancing leaves the unit stuck in cooling mode indefinitely, with frost accumulating and never being cleared.
Diagnostic Order
- Unplug the refrigerator and open the freezer's rear panel to inspect the evaporator coil directly -- a thick, solid sheet of ice rather than light frost confirms a defrost-cycle failure rather than a normal cooling issue.
- With the unit plugged in, use the manufacturer's forced-defrost sequence (varies by brand, usually a button combination) if your model supports it, and confirm the heater glows or warms.
- Test the defrost heater and bi-metal thermostat for continuity with a multimeter once the unit is unplugged and the rear panel is off.
DIY-Friendly or Call a Technician?
Most of the causes above -- switches, fans, valves, capacitors, sensors, and heaters -- are modular parts designed to be unplugged and swapped with basic hand tools once you have confirmed which one has failed, and none of them require opening the sealed refrigerant system. The one exception is anything inside that sealed system itself: the compressor, evaporator coil, condenser coil, or refrigerant lines. Servicing those legally requires EPA Section 608 certification and specialized recovery equipment, which is the point to stop diagnosing yourself and call a licensed appliance technician instead.
How to Confirm Before You Buy a Part
Before you order anything, take a minute to confirm fitment -- it is the difference between a repair that works the first time and a part that turns out to be the wrong revision.

Two refrigerators that look identical side by side can still take different parts if their model numbers differ by even a single trailing letter.
