Dryer Door Latch Broken
A broken door latch is different from a failed door switch, even though both can leave a dryer that will not start. The latch (also sold as a strike or catch) is the mechanical piece the door presses against to stay shut; the switch is the electrical sensor the latch has to trigger. A worn or broken latch can let the door swing open during a cycle, or hold closed but no longer press firmly enough to trigger the switch reliably.
The most obvious sign is a door that does not feel like it latches securely anymore -- it may need to be slammed to catch, pop open on its own mid-cycle, or feel loose even when closed. If instead the door closes and stays shut normally but the dryer still will not start, the problem is more likely the electrical door switch itself rather than the latch hardware.
Safety first. Dryers combine household electricity, a spinning drum and motor, and -- on gas models -- a live fuel line.
- Unplug the dryer, or shut off the breaker for a hardwired unit, before removing any panel or touching internal components.
- Gas dryers: shut off the gas supply valve behind the unit before working on it. If you smell gas at any point, leave the area immediately and call your gas utility from outside -- do not flip switches or search for the leak yourself.
- Lint is flammable. A clogged lint trap or exhaust vent is a fire hazard, not just a performance problem -- treat a dryer that runs hot, or a thermal fuse that keeps blowing, as a reason to check the vent, not just replace the part.
- Call a licensed technician if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.
Most Likely Causes
- Worn or broken strike/catch — The plastic or metal piece mounted on the door itself wears down or cracks over years of use, so it no longer engages the latch mechanism firmly. Sold as Strike (696144) or Catch (690081).
- Latch mechanism in the door frame — The spring-loaded receiver in the cabinet that the strike clicks into can weaken or bend, so it releases too easily or no longer grips.
- Misaligned door hinge — A door that has sagged slightly on its hinges no longer meets the latch at the correct angle, which can look identical to a broken latch even when the latch parts themselves are fine.
Latch hardware is mechanical and identical in function across electric and gas dryers -- fuel type has no effect on this part.
How to Check It
- Strike and catch: With the dryer unplugged, open and close the door slowly and watch exactly where the strike meets the catch -- a strike that is visibly cracked, worn at an angle, or does not seat fully into the catch has failed.
- Door switch behind the latch: If the strike and catch look fine but the dryer still will not start, test the door switch itself for continuity with the door manually held closed -- this isolates whether the problem is mechanical or electrical.
- Hinge alignment: Close the door and check for an even gap around all four edges against the front panel; an uneven gap points to a hinge issue rather than the latch itself.
Replacing the Latch Hardware
Strike and catch parts are usually held on with one or two screws and do not require removing the door itself. Unplug the dryer, remove the screws holding the worn piece, and note exactly how it was oriented before pulling it off, since strikes on some models are not symmetrical and will not latch correctly if installed upside down or backward. Test the door several times after installing the new part, checking that it clicks shut consistently before running a load, since a latch that still does not seat firmly after replacement usually means the receiving mechanism in the frame needs attention as well, not just the piece on the door.

How to Confirm Before You Buy a Part
