Refrigerator Fan Not Running

A refrigerator actually has up to two fans: the evaporator fan inside the freezer compartment, which circulates cold air to both the freezer and the fresh-food section, and the condenser fan underneath or behind the unit, which pulls air across the condenser coils to help reject heat. Either one failing produces a similar symptom -- the compressor may still run, but the refrigerator stops cooling properly.

Which fan has failed changes what you will notice: a dead evaporator fan usually means the freezer stays reasonably cold (air right at the evaporator coil is still cooling) while the fresh-food section warms up, since no fan is pushing that cold air forward. A dead condenser fan usually means both compartments gradually warm up together, and the compressor and compressor compartment may feel unusually hot to the touch.

Safety first. A refrigerator runs on standard household current but also contains a pressurized, sealed refrigerant system.

Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before you disconnect it, and set screws aside in the order you remove them -- it makes reassembly far less error-prone.

  1. Refrigerator Evaporator Motor (part 240369702) — the fan motor behind the freezer's rear panel has stopped turning, often because ice has built up around the blade and physically jammed it, or because the motor bearing itself has worn out. Diagnostic Order

  1. Unplug the refrigerator and open the freezer's rear panel to reach the evaporator fan -- spin the blade by hand and feel for grinding, resistance, or ice contact.
  2. If the evaporator fan spins freely, check the condenser fan underneath or behind the unit the same way.
  3. With the unit plugged back in, listen for which fan runs and which stays silent when the compressor cycles on -- this narrows the failure to one specific motor before you buy a part.

DIY-Friendly or Call a Technician?
