Ice Buildup in Freezer

A light, even layer of frost is normal between defrost cycles. Heavy ice buildup -- thick sheets on the interior walls, ice sealing shelves in place, or a solid block covering the evaporator coil behind the rear panel -- means the defrost cycle has stopped working correctly, or warm humid air is getting into the freezer faster than the system can handle.

This overlaps closely with "defrost problems," since a failed defrost heater or thermostat is the most common direct cause of ice buildup. The difference in this page is the added focus on door sealing, since a door that is not closing fully is the most common way outside humidity gets in to begin with.

Safety first. A refrigerator runs on standard household current but also contains a pressurized, sealed refrigerant system.

Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before you disconnect it, and set screws aside in the order you remove them -- it makes reassembly far less error-prone.

Most Likely Causes

  1. Refrigerator Defrost Heater WR51X10055 (part WR51X10055) — if the heater that is supposed to melt frost off the evaporator coil during each defrost cycle has burned out, ice accumulates a little more with every cycle until it eventually blocks the evaporator fan and airflow entirely.
  2. Refrigerator Defrost Bi-Metal Thermostat (part 5303918202) — this thermostat has to sense the coil is cold enough before allowing the defrost cycle to run; if it fails, the cycle may never trigger even with a working heater.   3. Refrigerator Door Cam (Black) (part 2182178) — warm, humid kitchen air entering through a poorly sealed door condenses and freezes inside the compartment every time the door is opened. Diagnostic Order

  1. Unplug the unit and open the freezer's rear panel to check whether the buildup is a light frost (normal) or a solid sheet of ice covering the coil and fan (defrost failure).
  2. Run the dollar-bill test on the door gasket around its full perimeter to rule out a simple sealing problem before assuming a part inside the defrost system has failed.
  3. Test the defrost heater and bi-metal thermostat for continuity with a multimeter once the unit is unplugged and the ice has been cleared.

DIY-Friendly or Call a Technician?

Most of the causes above -- switches, fans, valves, capacitors, sensors, and heaters -- are modular parts designed to be unplugged and swapped with basic hand tools once you have confirmed which one has failed, and none of them require opening the sealed refrigerant system. The one exception is anything inside that sealed system itself: the compressor, evaporator coil, condenser coil, or refrigerant lines. Servicing those legally requires EPA Section 608 certification and specialized recovery equipment, which is the point to stop diagnosing yourself and call a licensed appliance technician instead.

How to Confirm Before You Buy a Part

Before you order anything, take a minute to confirm fitment -- it is the difference between a repair that works the first time and a part that turns out to be the wrong revision.

The full model number matters more than the brand and appliance type alone: manufacturers commonly keep one cabinet design across several model numbers spanning multiple years, while quietly changing the exact fan motor, water valve, or control board partway through that run.
