Refrigerator Making Loud Noise

Refrigerator Evaporator Fan Blade (part 2163777) — a grinding, scraping, or clicking sound coming from inside the freezer (behind the rear panel) most often means the fan blade is physically contacting a buildup of frost or a dislodged piece of packaging.   4. Ice Maker Motor (part 5304445222) — a grinding noise that happens specifically when the ice maker cycles (rather than continuously) points to the ice maker's own ejector motor rather than the main cooling fans.

Diagnostic Order

  1. Note exactly when the noise happens -- continuously, only when the compressor is running, or only during an ice maker cycle -- since that alone narrows the list significantly.
  2. Unplug the unit and, working through the list above, spin each accessible fan blade by hand to check for resistance, grinding, or contact with ice.
  3. With the unit plugged back in, listen at the back near the compressor specifically for a buzz followed by a failed start attempt, which points to the run capacitor rather than a fan.

DIY-Friendly or Call a Technician?

Most of the causes above -- switches, fans, valves, capacitors, sensors, and heaters -- are modular parts designed to be unplugged and swapped with basic hand tools once you have confirmed which one has failed, and none of them require opening the sealed refrigerant system. The one exception is anything inside that sealed system itself: the compressor, evaporator coil, condenser coil, or refrigerant lines.
