Dishwasher Won't Start

A dishwasher that has power but will not start -- no lights, no hum, no response to pressing start -- is almost always a break in the door latch or control circuit rather than a problem with the wash motor or pump.   1. Check the breaker panel first, since a hardwired unit gives no other sign of lost power.
  2. Open and firmly close the door several times, listening for a consistent click each time.
  3. Test the interlock switch for continuity with the door held closed by hand.
  4. If the switch tests fine but the latch does not click consistently, inspect the mechanism and cable linking the handle to the switch for a disconnect or crack.
  5. If the door and latch check out completely, test the thermal fuse and control panel switch last, since board-level and control-panel faults are less common than a latch or door issue.

Work through these in order rather than guessing, since replacing a control board or touchpad before ruling out the much cheaper and more common door latch issue is one of the most frequent wasted repairs on this symptom.
