Dishwasher Leaking
A leaking dishwasher can lose water from several different points, and where it appears is the fastest way to narrow the cause -- water at the front of the door, water pooling directly underneath the unit, or water sprayed sideways onto the floor during the wash portion of the cycle all point to different parts.
Run a cycle and watch closely (or place dry paper towels around the base beforehand) to catch exactly where the water first appears -- that single observation usually narrows the cause to one of the parts below before you remove a single panel.
Safety first. A dishwasher combines household electricity with a pressurized water supply line and a tub that can hold hot standing water.
- Shut off power at the breaker. Most dishwashers are hardwired rather than plugged into an accessible outlet, so the breaker is the actual disconnect -- turning the dial or touchpad off does not remove power from the unit.
- Close the water supply valve under the sink or at the shutoff before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
- Standing water in the tub may be scalding. Let it cool before reaching in with bare hands.
- Never work on a unit that is still wired live. Confirm power is off at the breaker itself, not just at the control panel, before touching internal components.
Most Likely Causes
- Worn or misaligned door gasket — The most common cause. The rubber gasket around the door frame stiffens and cracks with age, or can slip out of its channel, letting water escape at the front of the door during the wash. Sold as Gasket (154685101).

- Pump seal or tub baffle leak — A worn seal where the pump shaft passes through the tub floor lets water leak directly underneath the unit during the wash or drain portion of the cycle. Related part: Bafle Tubcnr (WD08X0227 or WD08X0228).
- Spray arm spraying outside the tub — A cracked or improperly seated spray arm, or a load item blocking it at an odd angle, can direct water sideways against the door seal instead of downward, forcing water past a gasket that would otherwise seal fine.
- Overfilling from a restricted or stuck-open inlet valve — A valve that does not fully close lets the tub overfill past its normal level, and the overflow finds its way out around the door.
How to Check Each Part
- Door gasket: Run a hand along the entire seal feeling for stiffness, a tear, or a section that has pulled out of its channel -- most gasket failures are visible or feel obviously different from the rest of the seal.
- Water inlet valve: With the water supply on and the dishwasher off, look at the valve body and hose connections underneath for moisture; a valve that leaks with the unit completely off has failed internally.
- Pump seal: Leaks here usually appear directly under the pump housing during the wash or drain portion of the cycle rather than at the door; a wet floor under the center of the unit after a finished cycle points here.
- Spray arm alignment: Run an empty cycle with the door cracked slightly, if your model allows it, and watch whether water is being thrown at the door seal rather than straight down onto the racks.
Do Not Ignore a Slow Leak
A leak that only shows up as a small damp patch after every few cycles is easy to put off, but a dishwasher sits directly on a kitchen floor and often against cabinetry, so even a minor, steady leak can cause water damage to flooring or the particleboard base of nearby cabinets long before the leak itself gets bad enough to be obvious. Track down and fix a small leak as soon as you notice it rather than waiting for it to become a bigger, more obvious puddle.
