Unusual sounds from appliances are almost always a mechanical part failing. Identify the noise type to find the cause.
Refrigerator Noises
- Loud hum / buzz — Condenser fan motor or evaporator fan bearing failing.
- Clicking — Compressor start relay trying and failing to start. Replace the relay.
- Rattling — Drain pan loose, condenser coil vibration, or ice maker issue.
Washer Noises
- Banging / thumping — Drum bearing or spider arm failure. Repair before more damage occurs.
- Grinding — Foreign object (coin, button) in the pump or drum.
- High-pitched squeal — Drive belt slipping or worn motor coupling.
Dryer Noises
- Squealing — Drum bearing or felt seal worn.
- Thumping — Drive belt worn or drum glides/rollers failing.
- Grinding — Front drum bearing worn through.
