Washer Smells Bad or Musty
A bad smell from the washer is different from most symptoms on this site because it is rarely caused by a failed part -- it is almost always trapped moisture and residue that mold and bacteria feed on. The good news is that most causes here are fixed with cleaning rather than a replacement part.
Front-load washers are more prone to odor than top-load machines because the rubber door boot creates a sealed pocket that traps water, hair, and detergent residue, and because low-water HE wash cycles leave less water to rinse residue away. That does not mean top-load washers are immune -- a clogged filter or dispenser causes the same smell in either type.
Work through the checks below before assuming anything mechanical is wrong; only after cleaning fails to resolve the smell should you suspect a clogged drain pump filter or a failed part is trapping standing water somewhere in the machine.
Safety first. Washer repair involves electricity, water under pressure, and moving mechanical parts.
- Unplug the washer (or shut off the breaker) before removing any panel or touching internal components.
- Shut off both water supply valves behind the machine before disconnecting any hose, valve, or fitting.
- Call a licensed technician for anything involving a sealed system or the home's mains wiring, or if you are not confident identifying or safely accessing a part.
Take a photo of any wiring or hose routing before disconnecting it, and set screws and small parts aside in the order removed -- this alone prevents most reassembly mistakes.
Most Likely Causes
- Door boot / gasket residue (front-load) — Detergent, fabric softener, hair, and lint collect in the folds of the rubber door boot and stay wet between cycles, breeding mold. This is the single most common cause of washer odor. How to check: pull back the folds of the door boot gasket by hand and look and smell for a dark residue.
- Detergent and fabric softener dispenser buildup — Concentrated detergent and softener leave a sticky residue in the dispenser drawer and its feed tube that does not fully rinse away, especially with cold-water or quick cycles. How to check: remove the dispenser drawer (most slide out with a release tab) and inspect the tray and the cavity behind it for buildup.
- Drain pump filter or trap clogged — A partially clogged filter near the Pump Motor (part 8535760) lets small amounts of water sit and stagnate instead of fully draining after every cycle. How to check: open the pump filter access door on the lower front of the machine and inspect for standing water or debris.
- Standing water left in the tub between washes — Leaving wet laundry in the drum, or running mostly cold, short, low-water cycles, does not generate enough heat or agitation to rinse away biofilm that builds up on the tub and drum. How to check: run an empty hot-water cycle with the door left open afterward and see whether the smell improves.
- Vent or drain hose trapping sewer gas — Less common: if the drain hose is inserted too far into the standpipe, or the standpipe lacks a proper air gap, sewer gas can be siphoned back into the washer and mistaken for a washer odor. How to check: confirm the drain hose forms a loop and is not pushed more than a few inches into the standpipe.
Cleaning Routine That Prevents Odor
Leave the door or lid open between loads so the drum and boot can air out, wipe the door boot dry after the last load of the day, and run a monthly hot-water cycle with an appliance-safe washer cleaner or a cup of white vinegar. Switching from powder to a smaller amount of liquid detergent, or using an HE-rated detergent, also reduces the residue that feeds odor-causing bacteria in the first place.
Tools You Will Need
Most of the checks on this page use the same basic kit: a Phillips and flat-head screwdriver set for opening panels, a multimeter set to continuity/ohms for testing switches and motor windings, a flashlight for looking inside the cabinet, needle-nose pliers for hose clamps and small connectors, and a shallow pan with a towel for any step that involves disconnecting a hose or opening the pump filter access door. None of the checks above require specialty tools. Photograph any wiring harness or hose routing before disconnecting it so reassembly matches exactly, and keep screws grouped by the panel they came from rather than in one pile -- washers use several different screw lengths, and mixing them up is a common cause of a rattle appearing right after a repair.
When to Call a Professional
Most of the parts and checks covered on this page are within reach of a confident DIY repair with basic hand tools and an afternoon. Call a licensed appliance technician instead if a check requires working inside a sealed system, if you find damaged household wiring beyond the washer's own power cord, or if the suspected part sits behind a transmission or tub assembly that requires substantially disassembling the cabinet and you are not comfortable reassembling it correctly. A second, paid diagnosis is also worth it any time you have already replaced one suspected part and the exact same symptom returns.

Before ordering any replacement part, take a minute to confirm the fit -- it is the difference between a repair that works the first time and a part that has to be looked up twice.

- Read the full model number exactly as printed, including letters and dashes -- manufacturers often reuse near-identical model numbers across different production years that take different parts.

The full model number matters more than the brand and appliance type alone: manufacturers commonly reuse one body design across many model numbers over several years, changing the exact door latch, control board, or pump partway through that run. Two washers that look identical sitting side by side can still take different parts if their model numbers differ, even by a single trailing letter or digit.
