Oven Not Heating
An oven that runs but never actually heats is one of the most common range complaints, and it almost always narrows to one of a small handful of parts once you separate electric ranges from gas ranges. On an electric range the heating happens in a bake element you can usually see inside the oven cavity; on a gas range the same job is done by a burner igniter and a gas valve you generally cannot see without removing the oven bottom panel.
Before assuming a part has failed, confirm the basics: the oven display is lit and responding to button presses, the breaker for the range has not tripped, and -- on a gas range -- the gas supply valve behind the unit is fully open. Once those check out, the cause is almost always inside the heating circuit itself, not the electronics that control it.
A useful first triage step is watching exactly what happens when you start a bake cycle: on an electric range, look through the oven window for the bake element to glow within the first couple of minutes; on a gas range, listen for the igniter clicking or humming and watch briefly whether it glows at all. If the element glows but the oven still runs cold, or the igniter glows but never opens the valve, that observation alone points you straight at the right cause below instead of guessing.
Safety first: ranges and ovens combine electricity, gas, and extreme heat.
- Shut off power at the breaker before removing any panel, testing a switch, or touching internal wiring -- don't rely on the range's own power or oven control being off.
- On a GAS range, shut off the gas supply at the shutoff valve before working near the burners, igniter, or gas valve. Never test an igniter, spark electrode, or gas valve with gas flowing to the appliance.
- If you smell gas at any point, leave immediately and call your gas utility from outside the house -- do not flip switches, light anything, or try to troubleshoot the smell yourself.
- The oven cavity, bake and broil elements, and stovetop burners stay dangerously hot long after use -- let the range cool completely before opening it up or reaching inside.
- Gas line connections and gas valve work require a licensed technician. Do not attempt to disconnect, repair, or replace a gas line or gas valve yourself.
Most Likely Causes
Work through these from most to least common -- most range and oven repairs turn out to be one of the first two or three parts on this list, not the last.

- Igniter too weak or cracked (gas ranges) — a healthy igniter glows bright orange-white and draws enough current in about 30-90 seconds to open the oven's gas valve; a weak one glows dull orange, takes far longer, or never opens the valve at all. - Oven temperature sensor or probe reading incorrectly — the oven appears to run a full cycle but never reaches the set temperature, or the burner/element cycles on and off erratically because the board is getting a bad signal. - Oven selector switch or control board failure — least common. If the element/igniter, sensor, and safety thermostat all test normal, the switch or board that routes power to the heating circuit is the remaining suspect. How to Confirm Before You Buy a Part
Before ordering any replacement part, take a minute to confirm the fit -- it is the difference between a repair that works the first time and a part that does not match.

The full model number matters more than the brand and body style alone: one range body design is often sold under many model numbers over several years, with the exact igniter, element, switch, or control board changing partway through that run. Most of the parts above are within reach of a confident DIY repair using basic hand tools and a multimeter. Two situations are the exception. First, anything that requires opening a sealed gas valve, running a new gas line, or repairing a suspected gas leak is technician-only work -- these repairs need pressure testing and code-compliant fittings that are not a basic-tool job, and a mistake here is a safety hazard, not just a wasted part. Second, if you have already replaced the most likely part from the list above and the symptom persists, or a fault code keeps returning after a full power reset, a licensed technician with brand-specific diagnostic tools can usually isolate the remaining possibilities faster than continuing to swap parts by trial and error.
