Washer F21 Error Code

F21 is a long-drain fault code used on Whirlpool-family washers, most commonly associated with front-load models, functioning the same way as F02 on other platforms from the same manufacturer family: the control board timed the drain step and it took too long or did not complete.

Treat F21 as a targeted version of a general drain complaint. The code narrows your starting point to the drain path specifically, so start with the same checks used for a plain "won't drain" symptom rather than treating this as a separate, unrelated fault.

Front-load washers almost always use a separate electric drain pump rather than a belt-driven one, so a drive belt is rarely the cause of an F21 fault the way it can be on some top-load models.

  2. Drain hose kinked, too long, or improperly routed — A hose that is pinched, excessively long, or lifted higher than the manufacturer's maximum height for the standpipe restricts drainage.   3. Drain pump motor weak or seized — A Pump Motor (part 8535760) that runs slowly or intermittently due to wear can drain just slowly enough to trigger the timeout without failing outright. How to check: time a drain-only cycle and compare it to the expected drain time for your model.
  4. Coin trap or debris trap (select models) clogged — Some front-load models include a small secondary trap near the pump specifically for coins and small items, separate from the main filter. How to check: check your model's service manual for whether a separate coin trap exists in addition to the main filter.
  5. Wiring or control board fault in the drain circuit — Least common; after the pump, hose, and traps test clear, a wiring or board issue may be preventing the pump from running at full capacity.

F21 vs. F02

These two codes cover the same underlying category of fault (drain taking too long or failing) on different Whirlpool-family model ranges rather than representing different problems -- if your model's manual lists one and not the other, work through whichever code your display actually shows using the same drain-path checks.
