Washer Won't Drain — Common Causes & Parts

Washer Won't Drain

Standing water at the end of a cycle is one of the most common washer problems. Here's what causes it.

Common Causes

  1. Drain Pump (clogged or failed) — The #1 cause. Check the pump filter first — coins, lint, and small items get trapped here.
  2. Lid Switch Assembly (top-load) — The washer won't spin or drain if the lid switch thinks the lid is open.
  3. Door Latch (front-load) — If the latch doesn't register closed, drain cycle won't run.
  4. Drive Belt — A broken belt means the drum and pump don't turn.
  5. Control Board — Rarer but possible — the board fails to send the drain signal.

Error Codes

  • Whirlpool / Maytag: F21 or F02 = long drain / drain failure
  • LG: OE = drain error
  • Samsung: 5E or SE = drain error
