Washer Won't Drain — Common Causes & Parts
Washer Won't Drain
Standing water at the end of a cycle is one of the most common washer problems. Here's what causes it.
Common Causes
- Drain Pump (clogged or failed) — The #1 cause. Check the pump filter first — coins, lint, and small items get trapped here.
- Lid Switch Assembly (top-load) — The washer won't spin or drain if the lid switch thinks the lid is open.
- Door Latch (front-load) — If the latch doesn't register closed, drain cycle won't run.
- Drive Belt — A broken belt means the drum and pump don't turn.
- Control Board — Rarer but possible — the board fails to send the drain signal.
